Born 24 Nov 1891, at Mt. Vernon. Son of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Backus, 3116 McDougall Ave. Entered the 166th D. B. at Camp Lewis, 3 Nov 1917, and was honorably discharged 9 Nov 1917, on S.C.D. Former Everett high school student.

Leonard Clark Bacon, Marysville
Born 31 Jan 1897, in Tioga County PA. Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Bacon, Marysville. Enlisted in Mar 1914, in the Engrs. Corps, U.S.A., and at the expiration of his first enlistment, re-enlisted in the Medical Corps in June, 1918.

Walter H. Bacon, Edmonds
Born 11 May 1892 at Kelso. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bacon, Edmonds. Wife, Sybil Bacon. Entered the service 4 Nov 1917, at Camp Lewis and was transferred from the 1st Co., 166th D. B. to Co. A, 147th M. G. Bn., 41st Div., with which unit he went to France. Made corporal 17 Feb 1918, at Nantes, France. Discharged at Camp Lewis 20 Mar 1919. 111,501.

Lieut. Enoch W. Bagshaw, Everett
Born 31 Jan 1884, at Flint, Wales. Wife, Elizabeth Bagshaw. Father, F. Bagshaw, 1616 Broadway, Seattle. Commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Engineers at Everett, 15 Oct 1918, and went to Fort Douglas UT where he was assigned to the 403d Engineers. Was sent to the E.O.T.S., Camp Humphries, 7 Nov and remained there until he completed the course, where he was placed on the Eng. Res., 1 Feb 1919. Graduated from Broadway high school Seattle, 1903, and from the UW, 1908, with the degree of B. S. He has been a member of the Everett high school faculty for 8 years and as football coach developed teams that held the interscholastic championship of the State from 1911 to 1918. He was a member of the UW football teams of 1904,1905,1906, and 1907; all-northwest quarter in 1906 and captain of the 1906 and 1907 teams. He had two brothers in the service - Frank Bagshaw of Roslyn, at Camp Lewis and Cradoc L. Bagshaw of Seattle dispatch runner with the 161st Inf., A.E.F., wounded 11 Aug 1918. Lieutenant Bagshaw became 1st lieutenant in Company M, 3d Wash. Inf., N. G., in May 1919, upon the resignation of 1st Lieutenant W. H. Mason.

Sergt. Russell Baird, Everett
Born 18 Aug. 1897. Son of Mr. and Mrs. S.M. Baird, 2016 Pacific Ave. Enlisted in the Medical Enlisted Reserve Corps 23 Apr. 1918, at Vancouver Barracks. On 16 Oct. he was transferred to the S.A.T.C., Co. B, at North Pacific College, Portland. He was discharged there 13 Dec 1918. 881,768. Graduated from the Everett high school in 1915, and later attended the U. of Washington and the North Pacific College.

Floyd D. Balch, Snohomish
Born 18 Oct 1895, at Cedarvale KS. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Balch, Snohomish. Re-enlisted in 5th Co., 16 Mar 1916, and after the company was mobilized into federal service, was transferred to Batt. A, 69th Art. and went to France with that regiment. Private, first class. Discharged 19 Mar 1919, at Camp Lewis.

Troy M. Bales, Snohomish
Born at Richland MS. Entered the service through Snohomish 21 Feb 1918, at the age of 22 yrs. Served as a member of the 33d Sqdn., and was discharged at Vancouver Barracks 28 Dec 1918. 876,834.

James H. Ballew, Everett
Born 30 Aug 1899, at Park River ND. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Ballew. Entered the service 15 Oct 1918, in the S.A.T.C. at Pullman. Discharged 18 Dec 1918 at Pullman. 5,3033,657. Brother of John A. Ballew, U.S. Navy.

John A. Ballew, Everett
Born 12 Oct 1896, at Mound City SD. Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ballew, Everett. Enlisted in the Navy, 29 Sep 1917, and served on a destroyer. Brother of James H. Ballew, S.A.T.C. Former Everett high school student.

Cecil M. Ballinger, Everett
Born 9 Jul 1892 at Albiline (sic) TX. Son of Mrs. Edith V. Thornton, 1915 Rucker Ave. Entered the service 7 Oct 1918, and served in the 4th Instruction Co., Buzzer School, Signal Corps, from that date until 7 Jan 1919. Was placed in 46th Co., 166th D. B., 7 Jan and discharged out of that unit for 1 Feb 1919, at Camp Lewis. 984,133. Private, first class. Former Everett high school student.

Sergeant Harvey E. Bancroft, Everett
Born 25 Nov 1892, at Battle Creek MI. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Bancroft, 3024 Kromer. He entered Camp Lewis as a wireless operator in the Signal Corps. and served in Co. A, 116th Bn. He was transferred from Camp Lewis to Camp Greene, and from there to Camp Mills and then overseas. Served in the Intelligence Department in the Second Army Corps in France, and was with the A.E.F. from 26 Nov 1917 to 28 Jun 1919. He was in the Army 28 mos.

Lieut. Floyd F. Barber, Everett
Barber was appointed to the 2d Engineers Camp at Vancouver Barracks with the rank of 1st lieutenant, and reported at that station 1 Sep 1917.

Served in the U.S.N.R.F., Naval Training Station, Seattle, and was released from duty 17 Dec 1918.

Born 2 Jul 1876, at Gantilly, Quebec. Son of Mr. and Mrs. A Baril of Gantilly. He enlisted in 5th Co., 8 Jul 1918, at Snohomish, and later was transferred to Batt. B, 39th Art., C.A.C. Cook. Discharged through 26th Co., 166th D.B., Camp Lewis, 26 Dec. 1918 830,108.

Private Abner Allen Barnes, Everett
Born 28 Feb 1894, at Zeanale KS. Son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Barnes, 2105 Rockefeller Ave. Entered the service 25 Apr 1918, and became a member of the machine gun co., 355th Inf., 89th Div. On 28 Jan 1919, he was transferred to the 338th Inf., 88th Div. He served in France with the 89th Div., during the time it was in action, and was in the St. Mihiel battle. Discharged 11 Apr 1919. 2,845,015.

William F. Barnes, Machias
Born 11 Mar 1894, at Aberdeen. Wife, Helen Barnes. Son of Mr.and Mrs. Sidney Barns, Machias. Reported at Camp Lewis 26 Apr 1918, and 3 weeks later was sent to Ft. Riley in the Medical Corps. From there he was sent to the Mayo Bros., Rochester, Minn. for instruction. He was returned to Fort Riley, and then sent to Camp Cody, where he was discharged 6 Dec 1918.

Born at Onana IA. Entered the service 14 Jan 1918. Left the U.S. 31 Aug 1918, and arrived in England, 13 Sep 1918. Left England, 23 Nov 1918, and arrived in the U.S., 24 Dec 1918. He served in the Aviation Corps. Discharged at Camp Lewis through the 41st Co., 166th D.B., 28 Dec 1918. 1,070,739.

Dee Barnhart, Marysville
Born 9 Jul 1897 at Davenport. Son of Mrs. Maria Barnhart, Marysville. Enlisted 26 Mar 1918 and became a member of Co. C, 31st Engrs. at Fort Leavenworth. The 31st Engrs. was organized about 1 Apr 1918; left Fort Leavenworth 18 May arrived at Camp Mills 4 am. 5 Jun, boarded the transport Manchuria at Hoboken 5 Jun, left Hoboken 7 Am 7 Jun, arrived at St. Nazaire 19 Jun, arrived at Saumer 23 Jun, left 8 Oct and arrived at Camp G. M. Dodge, Montoir, 9 Oct; organization changed 7 Sep to the 31st Regt. Trans. Corps, by G. O. 42, 42 Hq. S. O. S. The organization of Co. C was again changed to 3d Co. Trans. Corps. 14th Grand Div., 8 Dec 1918.

Othiel Barnhill, Everett
Born at Victor MT, 11 Sep 1900. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Barnhill, 3328 Oakes Ave. Enlisted on 10 Oct 1918, at the age of 18 years and one month, in the S.A.T.C., UW and was assigned to Co. A, Discharged 18 Dec 1918, at Seattle. 4,593,159. Graduated from Everett hs in Jun 1918.

Wesley I. Barr, Arlington
Born 10 Apr 1896. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Barr, R.F.D. 3, Arlington. Entered Camp Lewis 5 Oct 1917, in the inf., but was transferred to the 16th F.A., 4th Div., with which he served in France and in the Army of Occupation. He was wounded in action 30 Jul 1918, while in action with the 4th Div. Brother of Willis E. Barr.

Born at Arlington. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Barr, R.F.D. 3, Arlington. Entered the service 24 Jul 1918, at Dixon KY, at the age of 27 yrs. 9 mos. He served in Batt. B, 6th Regt., F.A.R.D., at Camp Zachary Taylor. Discharged 12 Dec 1918. 3,891,844. Brother of Wesley I. Barr, 16th F.A.

Albert Barraman, Marysville
Born 21 Nov 1899, at Port Angeles. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Barraman, Marysville. Enlisted 10 Apr 1917, in 12th Co., and after serving 6 months at Everett and Fort Casey was honorably discharged on account of being under age. Upon returning to Everett, he enlisted in Co. C, W.S.G. (later Co. M, 3d Wash. Inf., N. G.). On 12 Apr 1918, he received his discharge from the National Guard to enlist in the Navy and received the radio instruction at the US Training Station. He was assigned as a radio operator on the submarine H-8 at the submarine base, San Pedro CA. Was released to inactive duty 7 Mar 1919.

Edward Bartholomew, Lowell
Born 26 Dec 1892, at Denstrun PA. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Bartholomew, Lowell. He enlisted in the Navy in Nov. 1917, and after training at Mare Island was assigned to patrol duty.

Alden F. Bartlett, Everett
Born at East Jordan MI. He enlisted in the Naval Miltia at Everett 6 May 1916. He was mustered into federal service 7 Apr 1917, and sailed from Bremerton on the U.S.S. South Dakota. He served 21 mos. in the Navy.

Carl J. Bartlett, Marysville
Born 7 Apr 1897, at Marysville. Son of Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Bartlett of Marysville. Entered the 5 Aug 1918, at Arlington, and became a member of Co. D, 12th Inf., 8th Div., at Camp Fremont. On 10 Sep 1918, he was transferred to the 22d M.G. Bn. of the same division. Discharged 22 Mar 1919, at Camp Lewis, out of 26th Co., 166th D.B. 4,266,873. He graduated from the Marysville hs in 1916. He was married 19 Jan. 1918, to Miss Edna Schumacher of Monroe. Brother of Rex Lee Bartlett, U.S.N.R.F.

Born 23 Jul 1890, at Edmonds. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar F. Bartlett, Edmonds. Enlisted in the Navy at Seattle 31 May 1918. Released 21 Dec 1918, from the Gulfport Naval Training Station. Brother of Clyde J. Bartlett.

Carpenters Mate Marysville Rex L. Bartlett,
Born 22 Sep 1895, at Marysville. Son of Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Bartlett, Marysville. Enlisted in the Navy at Seattle, and from Bremerton shipped aboard the U.S.S. Great Northern. He graduated from Marysville hs in 1914. Brother of Carl J. Bartlett, 22d M.G. Bn.

Raymond Barton, Everett
Born at Mendota MO. Entered the service from Everett, 22 Jun 1918, and served in France with Co.B., 305th Inf.. 77th Div. He was in the Meuse-Argonne from 26 Sep to 11 Nov 1918. He left the US, 7 Aug 1918, and returned 24 Apr 1919. Discharged 23 May 1919 at Camp Lewis. 3,133,552.

Raymond Earl Barton, Lowell
Born 5 Feb 1888, at Mendota MO. Son of Eliza A. Barton, Lowell. Entered the service 24 Jun 1918, at Camp Lewis. From 166th D.B., Camp Lewis, he was transferred to Co. B, 157th Inf. 40th Div. at Camp Kearny, and went to France with that unit. In France he was transferred to Co. B, 305th Inf., 77th Div., and was in action with the 77th Div. in the Meuse-Argonne, from 26 Sep to 11 Nov 1918. Discharged 23 May 1919.

James Edward Bartram, Everett
Born 19 Jun 1895, at Jefferson OH. Son of Ada S. Bartram, 1301 Grand Ave. Private Bartram enlisted in the Air Service soon after the U.S. declared war on Germany, and served in the 155th Aero Sqdn., A.E.F. He was gassed while in action in France. He was discharged the latter part of Mar 1919, at Garden City NY and is now residing in Ashland MT. He was also stationed in England during part of the time of his enlistment in the Army.

Lieut. Alfred Bass, Everett
Born 21 Apr 1892, at Winnipeg, Canada. Wife Jean Bass. Son of Mrs. Martha Fuson, Richmond Highlands, Enlisted 21 Aug 1917, in the Air Service at Ft. Lawton. Was transferred from the 125th Aero Sqdn. at Morrison VA. On 22 Dec. was assigned to the Army Balloon School. at Ft. Omaha as an instructor. On 21 Mar 1918, was assigned to the U.S. School of Aeronautics, at Columbus OH as an instructor. On 27 May 1918, was assigned to Omaha and on 14 Jul was assigned to the U.S. Army Balloon School at Arcadia. Received his commission as a second lieut. 12 Sep 1918. Graduated from the Broadway hs, Seattle in 1910, and attended the UW after graduating. Discharged 4 Jan 1919.

Casper E. Bast, Everett
Born at Tacoma, 28 Apr 1889. Son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Bast, 3620 Broadway. Reported at Camp Lewis 3 Oct 1917, and was assigned to Co. D, 161st Inf. 26th Div. Sailed from Hoboken 11 Dec 1917, arriving at Brest 27 Dec. He was at Is-sur-Tille, a rest camp, until 3 Feb 1918, and then to St. Aignan, a replacement camp. Transferred to Co. B, 102d Inf., 26th Div., 28 Jun. Went into action at Moye, in Lorraine sector 1 Jul., and was gassed in the Belleau Woods 16 Jul. Taken to Base Hospital 24 at Gondricourt and later to 17 at Dijon, where after convalescing he was transferred to the Medical Detachment. Transferred to Co. D, 161st Inf. 25 Nov. Sailed from Brest 11 Jan 1919, arriving at Boston 21 Jan. Sent to Camp Devens and then to Camp Lewis on 3 Feb Discharged 8 Mar 1919.

Born at Arlington. Entered the S.A.T.C. at the age of 18 years. He was a member of Co. I. Discharged at Seattle 18 Dec 1918. 4,593,091

Pedec Batten, Everett
Born in Christiansund Norway. Entered the service 27 Jun 1918, and served in the 115th Spruce Sqdn. Discharged at Vancouver Barracks 25 Jan 1919. 3,138,862.

William Joseph Baudry, Everett
born at Escanaba MI. Enlisted in the Everett Naval Militia 10 Jun 1918, at the age of 18. Mustered into federal service 7 Apr 1917, and served on the U.S.S. South Dakota. Released from active service 17 Feb 1919, at Pelham Bay Park NY.

Private George Bauguess, Arlington
Served in the Army as a member of the 91st Div., and was in action with it in its operations in France and Belgium.

Lawrence W. Bavrey, Everett
born 22 Aug 1896, at Saco MT. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Bavrey, 1306 Broadway. Enlisted in the U.S.N.R.F. in August, 1918, at the Naval Training Camp, Seattle. Rating, Seaman, 2d class, radio. Released 13 Feb 1919, at the U. S. Naval Training Camp at Seattle.

Andrew N. Bayeoryes, Everett
Born 17 Apr 1891, at Gavalon, Greece. Entered Camp Lewis 25 Apr 1918, and became a member of the Med. Detach., 361st Inf., 91st Div., with which unit he went to France, and served until discharged. Was in reserve with the 91st at St. Mihiel, and was in the Meuse-Argonne from 26 Sep to 9 Oct, and again from 11 to 13 Oct; and in the Flanders operations, Belgium, 1 to 11 Nov.Was one of the men who helped carry Major Miller back to the dressing station, after he had been wounded in the Meuse-Argonne. Many readers, no doubt, have heard of the shell which fell among the wounded of the 91st on the night of 26 Sept., killing 14. Pvt. Bayeoryes was lying about five ft. from where the shell struck and was covered with mud, but escaped injury. One of his "pals" from Seattle was standing up at the time, a few feet away, and was killed, being struck in the head by fragments of the shell. 291,421. Discharged 1 May 1919, at Camp Lewis.

Kenneth P. Bayne, Everett
Born at Sioux City IA, 18 Jun 1897. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Bayne, 2314 Oakes Ave. Enlisted at Camp Murray, 30 Jun 1917, and became a member of Co. F, 18th Engrs. (Ry.). He left Camp Murray 1 Aug for New York and on 9 Apr sailed for Liverpool; arrived at Liverpool 23 Apr and the next day went to Southhampton; left Southhampton on 29 Apr for La Havre; went to Bordeaux 1 Sep and was at Bassens Dock from 5 Dec 1917 until 14 Jul 1918. From there he went to the Talmont Dock project to remain until 13 Nov when he went to La Rochelle, where he was stationed until 14 Dec. From there he went to Camp Beau Desert, where he remained until 6 Mar 1919. Was on detached service, Q.E.F. University, at Beaune Cote-d-Or until 6 Apr when he went to Bordeaux to embark. Discharged at Camp Lewis 16 May 1919. 169,941.

Arthur H. Bean, Everett
Born at Seattle. Entered the service 19 Oct 1918,

Arthur Herbert Bean, Maltby
Born 4 Mar 1898, at Seattle. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert W Bean, Maltby. Entered the S.A.T.C. at the UW training Camp, 19 Oct 1918. He was transferred to a casual detachment on the 44th Inf., with which he served until 15 Feb 1919, when he received he discharge at Ft. Lewis. 4,593,341.

Chester L. Beard, Everett
Born 5 Mar 1894, at Tenino. Son of Mrs. J. F. Beard of 3201 Nassau St., Everett, and the late J. F. Beard, who was long associated with the sheriff's office of this county. He volunteered 28 Jul 1917, with the Marines and served with the prison detachment at Mare Island. 14 Dec 1917 he was transferred to the 129th Co. and sent to Bremerton. Received his honorable discharge 1 Apr 1918. Attended the Everett hs for three years, 1910,1911, and 1912. In 1915, he and his brother, Lester L. Beard, entered the shoe business in Everett, and was so engaged until the time he volunteered.

Sergt. William K. Bebeau, Everett
Born 17 Aug 1888, at Chicago IL. He enlisted in 12th Co. 19 Oct 1917. From Fort Casey he was sent to the Coast Artillery School for Enlisted Specialists at Fort Scott, on 3 Jan 1918. On 21 Feb he was transferred to the Casual Detachment, C. A. School, Fort Monroe, receiving a rating as electrician sergeant, 1st class, upon completion of the course. He was transferred on 26 Aug to the 46th Art., C.A.C. He was at Camp Eustis from 26 Aug to 14 Oct. Arrived in France, 26 Oct, landing at Brest. Was stationed at Libourne 5 Nov. Left Marseilles 26 Jan 1919, and arrived in New York 12 Feb. From there he was sent to Camp Dix and assigned to 22d Co., 153d D. B. On 19 Feb he left for Camp Lewis, and upon his arrival was placed in the 43d Co., 166th D. B. Discharged 4 Mar 1919. Graduate of the Everett hs, class of 1907.

Otis Beck, Everett
Born 22 Oct 1894, in MS. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Beck, 1411 Wetmore. Enlisted 25 Oct. 1917, at Ft. Lawton and served in France as a member of Co. D, Co. E and 11th Co., 20th Engrs. (Forestry). Discharged at Camp Lewis 6 Jun 1919.

Mechanic Theodore Beckmeyer, Snohomish
Born 15 Jan 1893, at Hoffman IL. Son of Mr. and Mrs.William Beckmeyer, R.F.D. 3, Snohomish. Entered Camp Lewis 6 Sep 1917, and became a member of Co. E, 361st Inf., 91st Div., with which organization he served in France. He was in St. Mihiel in reserve, in the Meuse-Argonne and in the Lys-Scheldt Operations. He received a wound in the right leg on 1 Nov 1918, at Audenarde, Belgium, and on 1 Aug 1919, was still being treated at the Letterman General Hospital, Presidio, San Francisco.2,257,296.

Harry Bedal, Arlington
Headquarters Co., Inf. 8th Div. He entered the service in Jul 1918 and was discharged 16 May 1919, at Camp Lewis. He accompanied the 13th Inf. to Camp Mills and Camp Merritt.

Machinists Mate Bertram A. Bedell,
Born 28 May 1892, at Tacoma. Son of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Bedell, Everett. Enlisted in the Navy 3 Oct 1917, at Bremerton. Served as a machinist's mate on coast patrol for 18 mos. Wife, Lucille Bedell.

Midshipman Everett Eugene H. Beebe,
Born at Stevensville MT, 2 Dec 1889. Midshipman Beebe volunteered for service in the Navy 21 Jun 1917, reporting at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton. His service included training at Bremerton; at the U.S.S Naval Auxiliary School, Chicago; at the U.S.S Naval Auxiliary School, Cleveland; and at the Pelham Bay Naval Station, NY, where he attended the Officers' Material School. He had service on the U.S. Sub-Chaser 288 at Bremerton, and on the U.S. Sub-Chaser 310. His transfers were from the reserve force to the auxiliary force 25 Apr 1918, and back to the reserve force on 5 Aug 1918. On 15 Dec 1917, he was made a coxswain; on 1 Aug 1918, a quartermaster 2d class, and on 9 Dec 1918, he received his promotion as a midshipman. On 12 Dec 1918, he was released to inactive duty. Graduated from high school in Seattle in 1908, and in 1913 received his degree of LL.B. from the UW. Played on the varsity baseball teams in 1912 and 1913. Arthur Wayne Beeson, Edmonds
Born 7 Aug 1887, in Wayne County IN. Son of Mayor and Mrs. F.R. Beeson, Edmonds. Enlisted in the Navy 4 Jun 1917, at Seattle. Transferred from Bremerton 20 Aug. 1917, to the U.S.S. New York. During the period of his convoy work and mine laying operations, he witnessed 21 submarine attacks. His ship assisted in laying mines between Orkney Island and Norway, the Orkney Island and the Firth of Forth being used as bases. He was present at the surrender of the German fleet in the North Sea, and was a member of the guard of honor for President Wilson, when he landed in France on his first trip to Europe. Discharged at Newport News, 31 May 1919. Rating fireman, first class. Graduated from high school at Connersville IN.

Private Vincent Louis Befountaine, Everett
Born 30 Aug. 1886 at Lower East Chezzetcook, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Son of Mrs. Elizabeth Ferguson, of Lower East Chezzetcook, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Enlisted in the Canadian Army, 18 Dec. 1917, originally in the engineers but was later transferred to the inf. He sailed for England 19 Apr 1918, and left England for France on 18 Sep 1918, as a member of the 72d Overseas Batt. On 29 Sep 1918, after an engagement near Sancourt, was reported missing in action, and it was not until 31 Jul1919, that he was declared to have been killed inn action. He was a veteran of the Boer War.. He is survived by his wife, Lillie M. Belfountaine, who resides in Seattle. 2,137,812.

Sergt. Leo F. Bennett, Monroe
Born at Andover SD 3 Mar 1894. Son of Mr. and Mrs. T.N. Bennett, Monroe. Enlisted in the Air Service 15 Dec 1917, at Vancouver Barracks. After training in the U.S. he went to England as a member of the 834th Aero Sqdn. He was in training at Dover, England, for a period of 8 mos, and had almost completed his preliminary training for service in France when the armistice was signed. He was among the first of the A.E.F. forces that sailed for home, crossing on the Empress of Britain, and landing at New York 11 Dec. 1918. He died in New York from Spanish influenza on 17 Dec 1918. 697,152. Attended high school at Vancouver WA, from 1911 to 1915, and the UW in 1916. He was made a sergeant at Camp Mills. Last available reports show that 33 Washington men lost their lives while in the Air Service of the United States Army or that of its allies, and Sergt. Bennett was the only one from Snohomish County.

Enlisted in the U.S.N.R.F. 6 Aug 1917, and trained at the UW Training Station until 15 Dec., when he was transferred to Harvard to complete work in the radio course. He was there until 3 May 1918, when he went to the U. of Conn. From there he went to Philadelphia, then to Hoboke, and sailed for Brest 30 Jul 1918. While in France he was transferred to the U.S.S. Cahill, a mine-sweeper. Rating, electricion, 2d class. Mr. and Mrs. Benson have one daughter, Thora Benson. His brother, Harry T. Benson, was also in the service during the war.

Born 11 Jun 1886, at Redfield SD. Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Bickford, 4218 10th Ave., N.E., Seattle. Entered Federal service 25 Jul 1917, as commanding officer of old 12th Company. At that time he was county engineer of Snohomish county, but was granted a leave of absence for the remainder of his term. On 10 Nov 1917, he was assigned to the 8th Co., Wash. C.A.; and on 27 Dec was assigned to Batt. F, 63d Art., C.A.C. On 8 Jan 1918, he was sent to the School of Field Artillery at Ft. Sill, and returned to his battery 18 Mar. He went to France in command of his battery, and on 13 Jul was transferred to the Staff of the First Replacement Div. On 2 Feb 1919, he was placed in charge of quarry and road work in central France, and was relieved from that assignment 20 Jul 1919, returning to the U.S. 17 Aug 1919. Discharged 6 Sep 1919. I, 162d Inf., 41st Div. at Camp Mils. After reaching France he was transferred to Co. L, 126th Inf., 32d Div., 3 May 1918. Two weeks later he entered the Alsace sector and was in that sector from May 1918 to Jul 1919. He entered the Soissons sector 28 Jul and on 30 Jul was transferred to the Chateau Thierry sector. He was in action on the Oureq 30 Jul. and his company was relieved 7 Aug after capturing Fismes. On 28 Aug he entered the Soissons sector as a part of Mangin's 10th Army. He and his squad went over the top on the morning of 31 Aug., in the fight for Juvigny. Was caught in a communication trench covered by enemy machine gun fire and was severly wounded in the right thigh, dying soon afterward. In the battle at Juvigny on 31 Aug., Black's company suffered severely, only 13 coming out alive. He was made corp. 8 Aug 1918. He was a brother of Perry M. Black.

On 16 Jul. he was transferred to Camp Kearny and placed in Co. A, 158th Inf. He sailed for England 11 Aug, and landed in London 25 Aug. In France, he was transferred to Co. L, 111th Inf., 28th Div. on 16 Sep. He went into action in the Meuse-Argonne on 26 Sep, and on the 28th Received a gun shot wound. He was in hospital at Dijon, Bordeaux and Brest from 28 Sep to 20 Apr 1919, when he sailed for the U.S. He was sent to the hospital at Camp Lewis 10 May, and on 1 Jul was sent to the Letterman Hospital. He was still confined there on 30 Aug 1919.

Scott for Hoboken preparatory to sail for overseas, but the signing of the armistice shfted him to Camp Upton, arriving there 11 Nov. Was Born 2 Nov 1895 at Holton MI. He entered Camp Lewis from Arlington 3 Oct 1917, and became a member of the 5th Co., 166th D.B. On 4 Oct he was transferred to Co. D. 161st Inf. at Camp Mills, and left for France 13 Dec 1917. He was later transferred to Co. A, 161st Inf. in May 1918, and shortly after to Co. M of the famous 23d Inf., 2d Div. Went into action on 2 Jul 1918, shortly after being transferred, and was killed in action 2 Jul 1918, near Chateau-Thierry. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Blythe of Robe, and brother of Charles A. Blythe of the 217th Engrs. 75,435.

Private Alphonsus Bob, Tulalip
Was one of the two Tulalip Indians who gave their lives in France in the service of the U.S. He went to France with Co. D, 361st Inf., 91st Div., having entered Camp Lewis just before the division left for overseas. In less than 2 mos. after reporting at Camp Lewis he was in France, and on 27 Sep 1918, he died. He was the son of Georgie and Mary Bob. His mother died 3 days after receiving word of the death of her son in France, her death occurring 15 Oct 1918. Was born on the Tulalip Reservation in 1889. He attended the school at Tulalip, and was later employed at the same institution as a nightwatchman. He had planned before entering Camp Lewis, to enlist in the navy, fearing that he would not be called to the colors. It was with pride and happiness, however, that he received his call to enter the Army.

Enlisted in the Marine Corps, 11 Apr 1917, at Seattle, and from there was sent to Mare Island and placed in 7th Co., 5th Regt. Was later transferred to the 23d Co., 6th M. G. Bn. He sailed for France 31 Jul 1917, and saw service in France with the 2d Div. Sergeant. After the signing of the armistice was in the Army of Occupation.

Private Hugo W. Boettcher, Monroe
Born in Clay County MN. Son of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Boettcher, Monroe. Enlisted in Co. D, 2d Wash. Inf, at Seattle, in May 1917. He went to Camp Mills from Camp Murray with the regiment, where it became the 161st Inf., 41st Div. On 19 Jul 1918, after reaching France, he became a member of Co. I, 26th Inf., 1st Div. He was killed in action with the famous First, 19 Jul 1918, in the Soissons operations. Attended high school at Renton and Walla Walla.

Born 29 Jul 1895, at Spokane. Son of Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Boissonnault, 2310 Colby. Enlisted in the O.T.C. at the Presidio, 9 May 1917. He received his commission as a second lieut. of Inf., 15 Aug 1917, and was first assigned to Co. K, 63d Inf. at the Presidio. At Camp Meade he was assigned to the 77th Inf., and after a month was again assigned to Co. I, 63d Inf. at New York City. He was employed in the County Engineer's office before entering the service. Graduated from the Everett hs in 1913, and attended the UW 2 yrs.
