quote from the 1909 Quil Ceda
Marysville closed her first year in the Inter High School Debating Contests with both victory and defeat to her credit. The question for the year was: "Resolved, That Labor Unions Are Justified on Insisting through all Lawful Means at Their Disposal on the 'Closed Shop.'"

Our first contest was held with LaConner on November 13. The home school was represented by Helen Schuhmacher, Alma Morgan and Lucile Rathvon. La Conner's representatives were: Ethel Bates, Herman Anderson and Oscar Johnson. Superintendent Bruner, of La Conner, acted as chairman and Professors Doggy Alden and thorp, all of the University, served as judges. Marysville upheld the negative in this contest, and succeeded in convincing all the judges that the "Closed Shop" was a bad thing. After the debate a reception was given the rival team, the judges and representatives of the visiting school.

In casting lots for position in the second contest, Marysville drew a blank and was therefore entitled to enter the third series without further contest.

For the third series we drew the affirmative side of the question, and was pitted against Snohomish. Realizing that it would require very strenuous efforts to win on the affirmative, especially with Snohomish as an opponent, our team, now limited to Hellen (sic) Schuhmacher and Lucile Rathvon went to work with a will that often brings victory. But when they met the Snohomish team, Walter St. John and Guy Bakeman, here on February 19, they found it extremely difficult to convert the judges to their way of thinking, so difficult was it that only one judge voted for us.

Superintendent Hodges of Snohomish acted as chairman of this contest and Rev. Mr. Mason, of Seattle, and Dr. Savory and Professor Henry, of the University, were the judges.

This was our first Waterloo and we tried to make the most of it by being as good loosers as we knew how to be. But wait till next time. We'll show 'em!!

Willaim Sinclair succeeded in winning the first prize at the Annual Inter-scholastic Contest (Dramatic Secetion), held at the State University, May 14. The title of his piece was "The Wild Olive Wreath.: All the school join in giving three cheers for Willie. He's the boy.
