BASKETBALL

GIRLS

In athletics, the girls of our High School are no less enthusiastic than the boys, as shown by their constant support of all student enterprises and cheering the teams to victory. In basketball the girls have made a record for themselves this year. Out of six games played they lost but one. Due to regular practice and Miss Tuyman's (sic) careful coaching, excellent team play was developed. The first game with Lowell resulted in a score of 22-11 in our favor. The second game with Lowell resulted in a score of 23-26, also in our favor. The third game was not used to such an enormous hall and their team play was less effective on account of finding it necessary to throw so far. The game resulted in a score of 10-14 in Mount Vernon's favor. Our girls feel certain that they could have won on home grounds, and the Mount Vernon team was evidently of the same opinion, as they would not accept a challenge to come and play in Marysville. The last two games were played with Edmonds and both games were won by our team by the scores of 17-6 and 31-6.

BOYS'

Top roll: Matts and Rathvon
Bottom roll: Dermody, Tompkinson and Schafer

At the close of the football season the boys went earnestly into basketball. After practicing faithfully for several weeks under Miss Brennan's coaching, Marysville soon had a team with quick and fast playing.

Early in the season several games were scheduled. The first game was played with the Welcome Athletic Club of our own home town, and resulted in a victory for our boys with a score of 14-19.

The Second game, played with LaConner at Marysville also resulted in a victory for Marysville. It was hotly contested game, however, and LaConner was defeated by a score of 22-23.

The following week the boys took their first trip, playing LaConner Friday night and Anacortes H. S. Saturday night. At LaConner they were defeated by a score of 14-19, but defeated the fast Anacortes team on their own homeground by a score of 12-14 the next evening.

The last game was played with Everett High School. The day started badly for the boys as the launch in which they started for Everett failed them, and they had to return to Marysville and walk three miles to the smelter and take the street car into Everett. When they reached there it was time to call the game, and the boys had to start in without any rest and practice in the hall. Here they went down to defeat, but the boys were not given a fair show, and under fair circumstances will make a record for themselves next year.
